Requesting medication data

In treatment, it is important that the practitioners know which medicines our clients are receiving. By working closely with pharmacists and other healthcare providers who prescribe medication, we can improve the safety of medication dispensing. The National Exchange Point (LSP) has been developed for this purpose, to which Arkin has been affiliated since March 2022.

National switching point (LSP)

The National Exchange Point is a kind of control tower between Arkin and all pharmacies in the Netherlands. If a client has given permission from the pharmacy, we can use this system to digitally request medication and temporarily view it. Previously, practitioners had to contact the pharmacy themselves. This is therefore no longer necessary if permission has been given for the sharing of the data.

[below FAQs about medication data]

How does digital retrieval of medication data work?

When there is an appointment with the client, Arkin requests the medication data. This happens automatically from 72 hours (3 days) before the appointment. The client gives permission for this data to be shared with the pharmacy by signing a form (Opt-in). Clients who have registered with 'Follow your care' will receive an email when data has been requested. Even if they have not given permission for the data to be shared. Of course, Arkin will not receive this data. The email states that the survey was not successful.

Because the data request is done daily for all clients who have an appointment with Arkin in the next 72 hours, a client may receive a message about this for several days in a row via 'Follow your care'.  We are still looking for a solution to improve this.

Frequently asked questions

Why do you see my medication data?

You have given your pharmacy permission to share your data via the National Exchange Point. Arkin has been connected to this since March 2022 and can therefore request your data when you have an appointment with your practitioner. More information about this can be found on volgjezorg.nl.

What data do you see exactly?

This concerns the current medication dispensing data from the pharmacy, so the medication you have received through the pharmacy. Self-care products that you buy at the drugstore, for example, are not visible.

How long will my data be visible?

The data is visible to your practitioner for up to 72 hours after the request. After that, they will be automatically deleted.

Why do I receive several emails that my data has been requested?

We generate an automatic file daily for all clients who have an appointment at Arkin in the next 72 hours. Because we look 72 hours ahead, your data may be requested several days in a row. We are still looking for a solution to improve this.

Why do I receive emails from Follow your care if I have not given permission for my data to be shared?

If you're signed in to Follow your care, you'll get a notification if a healthcare provider has tried to request your information. If you have not given permission for the sharing of your data, the data will not be received by Arkin or any other healthcare provider. The email you receive from Follow your care states that the survey was not successful.

Am I obliged to give permission to share my data?

No, but for medication safety it is important that a practitioner knows which medicines you are taking. If, despite this, you do not want your data to be shared, you can indicate this to your pharmacy.

What is Follow Your Care?

This is a website where you can see which healthcare providers have conducted a survey via the National Exchange Point (LSP).

Does Arkin have the right to request my data at all?

Requesting medical data is permitted insofar as this is necessary for the proper treatment or care of the client/patient. A healthcare provider may request medical data from other healthcare providers if:

  • There is a treatment agreement with the client/patient as referred to in Article 446 paragraph 1 of the WGBO, or;
  • He or she is directly involved in the implementation of the treatment agreement that another healthcare provider has with the client/patient.
